Fostering diverse, collaborative research networks is a goal for research on research (RoR) scholars, who study research practices contributing to the overall conduct of science. Practices such as peer review, publication, research funding and management, are relevant to all research disciplines; the aim of RoR is to explore them and address common issues together with funders, academic institutions and partners, to improve research process, culture, engagement, and impact.
F1000Research is a leading open access platform with an interdisciplinary academic readership. It publishes RoR-relevant work via its Research on Research, Policy & Culture Gateway, bringing together scholarship from diverse fields for a critical reflection of how research works and how it can be improved. This includes topical issues such as open publication, research culture, data management and artificial intelligence – which are always evolving and therefore need the engagement with actors in research for strategic direction, insight and to disseminate findings. To that end, the Gateway prioritises engagement activities such as author outreach, advisory groups, collaborations, and partnership building in the RoR space. The collaborations and partnerships particularly focus on knowledge exchange and shared research interests, and addressing key issues such as duplication, reproducibility, integrity, and waste in research.
Launched in 2021, the RoR Registry & Hub acts as an online repository for registering RoR activity (projects, studies, etc.) and is also a no-cost space to network, present latest work, and discuss topical issues in research. Importantly, the Registry promotes open science practices, making RoR work more discoverable and the registration of studies and publication of study data and outputs. It also helps build vital connections between research organisations, academia and RoR experts.
In 2023, F1000 and the RoR Registry & Hub formed a new collaborative partnership. Through this partnership, it is anticipated that RoR will reach a wider audience in research and lead to increased registration and open publication of relevant work. It will also allow registry users to benefit from a 20% discount on article processing charges if they choose to publish their work with the Research on Research, Culture & Policy Gateway.
Overall, the F1000Research and RoR Registry & Hub collaborative agreement will help promote open research and the reach and influence of RoR outputs. It is also an example of publishers and others in the research environment working together to improve the integrity and transparency of research and relevant practices.
