About this Collection
This collection gathers state-of-the-art research on dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and DSSC-related technologies. Since their advent in 1991, DSSCs have attracted much research and technological interest due to their high performance under dim and diffused light, the possibility of producing semi-transparent and flexible modules with several true colors, simple architecture, and low manufacturing costs. Decades of intense research turned DSSCs into a desirable and sustainable technology for building integrated photovoltaics, agrovoltaic plants, and wearable and indoor photovoltaic appliances. Enormous research efforts contributed to understanding DSSC fundamentals, improving light conversion efficiency, long-term stability, and market attractiveness.

However there are still many scientific and technological challenges to address before the huge potential of DSSCs is fully realized.

This collection aims to bring the newest advancements in DSSCs and DSSC-related technologies, ultimately pushing forward innovative ideas in the field for further research or commercial development. Using the F1000Research publishing model, we are creating an open forum for discussion and dissemination of research and knowledge. The scope of this collection includes, but is not limited to:
  • DSSCs for state-of-the-art application assets, including building integration, agro-photovoltaic, and wearable and indoor photovoltaic devices and systems
  • DSSC sustainability assessment and promotion
  • Sustainable raw materials and fabrication process
  • Conventional and less common types of DSSCs
  • Integrated and hybrid DSSC devices
  • DSSC integration with energy production and storage systems
  • Photogeneration, charge and mass transport, recombination, and degradation phenomena in DSSCs
  • Advanced DSSC characterization
  • Materials and processes for DSSCs, including electrodes, electron and hole transport materials, new catalysts, dyes, co-adsorbents, additives, electrolytes, sealing materials

Along with advancing these topics, this collection welcomes theoretical research, critical reviews and projection notes on relevant issues for a deeper understanding of the fundamentals, design, development, and production of DSSCs and DSSC-related technologies.
