About this Gateway
Scope
The Eye Health Gateway has been set up to provide visibility for all research related to the eye. From basic biological research on the cells and tissues that make up the eye, through to clinical trials of new treatments and surgical methods, the Gateway accepts content across the fields of optometry and ophthalmology.
The gateway allows researchers in the field of eye health to publish openly, rapidly and transparently using F1000Research’s innovative publishing model. Authors can take advantage of the full range of article types available allowing them to publish all outputs from their research, alongside the data underlying their results. The Gateway also accepts non-peer reviewed content in the form of documents, posters and slides.
Eligibility
The Eye Health Gateway accepts all content related to the eye including diseases and conditions related to sight.
L V Prasad Eye Institute
The Eye Health Gateway is affiliated with L V Prasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad, India.
Established in 1987, L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI), a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Prevention of Blindness, is a comprehensive eye health facility. The Institute has ten active arms to its areas of operations: Clinical Services, Education, Research, Vision Rehabilitation, Rural and Community Eye Health, Eye Banking, Advocacy and Policy Planning, Capacity Building, Innovation and Product Development. The mission of L V Prasad Eye Institute is to be a centre of excellence in Eye care services, basic and clinical research into eye diseases and vision-threatening conditions, training, product development, and rehabilitation for those with incurable visual disability, with a focus on extending equitable and efficient Eye care to underserved populations in the developing world. LVPEI's mission is to provide equitable and quality eye care to all sections of society. In the last three decades, LVPEI has served close to 30 million people, with more than 40 percent services provided free of cost regardless of complexity, reached close to a thousand villages, trained more than twenty-thousand eye care professionals, and published over 2000 papers in international peer-reviewed scientific journals. Most recently, in 2020-21 and 2021-22 LVPEI published 565 and 505 PubMed-indexed research papers, respectively.
Gateway Areas
The Clinical Research area focuses of research being performed in the clinic or involving patients across the fields of ophthalmology, vision sciences, optics and optometry. Articles include clinical trials, case report and case series, and epidemiological studies.
The Basic and Translational Research area provides a venue for all content related to the study of the underlying biological of the eye, from the genetic level through to the ocular tissues and their surroundings. This area also includes research conducted in vitro and in vivo that is translational in nature, aiming to gather data that may be applicable in the clinical setting.
Visual impairment and blindness are global phenomena, the Global Health Area provides a venue for publications looking to address these globally and ensure equitable eye care for all. This area includes research presenting and reporting on educational interventions, capacity building and research to address clinical needs in diverse populations.
The Diagnostics and Imaging area combines research outputs related to diagnostic techniques used on the eye as well as methods of imaging ocular tissues. We welcome submissions reporting adaptions and optimisation of existing techniques, as well as novel methodologies and technologies.
The Innovations and Surgical Techniques area highlights innovative research, treatments and methodologies in ocular science, as well as surgical techniques. We welcome the reporting of existing and novel surgical methodologies whether in the context of Method Articles or Clinical Trials.
The L V Prasad Eye Institute area highlights all research published on the Gateway from researchers and clinicians based at our founding Affiliate, the L V Prasad Eye Institute.
