Rapid and transparent dissemination of research in all areas of human migration
Overview
Migration has always been a key component of the human experience. Populations and individuals have crossed mountains, plains and bodies of water in search of new lives throughout our history. There are myriad factors that drive human migration, those that pull us to seek out better opportunities, and those that push us to flee persecution, economic deprivation, and other dangers. Migration results in a broad spectrum of individual and family experiences; for those who leave, those who remain, and those who welcome (or not) the new arrivals.
The impacts of human migration today are truly global and reach into many aspects of the human experience and of society. Indeed, the drivers, experiences and outcomes of human migration touch upon most of the United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals for the 2030 Agenda. The legal rights of refugees and other displaced persons, multigenerational integration, societal and political responses to large-scale migration, negative effects of climate change on agriculture contributing to out-migration and urbanization and a range of economic impacts — these are but a few of the most topical contemporary issues related to human migration. The consequences of migration from remittances to origin area households can have profound implications for their livelihoods and well-being, as well as macro implications for capital flows and investment.
Research on human migration, on both its determinants and consequences, is central in the social sciences. There is an interconnectedness to much of this research crossing, as it does, such varied disciplines. Our understanding of human migration and our approaches towards mitigating its more negative impacts are best served through not only interdisciplinary but open and transparent research.
