About this Gateway
This gateway is no longer accepting submissions
GODAN will continue to partner with us on our new Agriculture, Food and Nutrition gateway, which is accepting submissions in those topics.
Content published on the GODAN gateway between 2013 and 2021 is preserved in this archived gateway.

Nearly 800 million people struggle with debilitating hunger and malnutrition in every corner of the globe. That’s one in every nine people, with the majority being women and children. We are convinced that the solution to Zero Hunger lies within existing, but often unavailable, agriculture and nutrition data.
The Global Open Data for Agriculture and Nutrition (GODAN) initiative seeks to support global efforts to make data relevant to agriculture and nutrition available, accessible, and usable for unrestricted use worldwide. The initiative focuses on building high-level policy and public and private institutional support for open data. GODAN promotes collaboration to harness the growing volume of data generated by new technologies to solve long-standing problems and to benefit farmers and the health of consumers.
Since its launch in October 2013, the group has grown rapidly and currently involves over 500 partners from national governments, non-governmental, international and private sector organisations that have committed to a joint Statement of Purpose.
The GODAN gateway was launched to help disseminate work in these aforementioned areas as openly and quickly as possible. It publishes:
Peer reviewed articles describing open data & informatics research projects, applications that enable or utilize open data, and other open knowledge initiatives relating to agriculture and nutrition.
GODAN Secretariat and Partners outputs such as impact reports, discussion papers and progress reports.
Posters and slide presentations focused on open agriculture & nutrition
Authors from GODAN Partners are eligible for a 20% reduction in APCs and further discounts and waivers are offered to authors from AGORA eligible countries.

Progress in science and technology can only be achieved by building upon a community knowledge base. This is as true for agricultural development as for anything else. However, current technical, financial, legal and cultural barriers can make it difficult to access and use existing agricultural knowledge.

Open Knowledge initiatives that promote free, unrestricted access to research, data, software and learning materials promise to further accelerate agricultural development, reduce hunger and poverty, and improve food security in less economically developed countries.

Open Knowledge in Agricultural Development (OKAD) is where authors can publish and share their original research findings, initiatives, case studies, perspectives and opinions relating to open knowledge initiatives within all areas in the context of agriculture, agri-food and agro-biodiversity. We encourage the submission of articles on topics including, but not limited to:

  • E-infrastructure for agricultural development
  • Publishing and communicating scientific knowledge
  • Open access, open data and open educational resources
  • Dissemination, metrics and impact assessment
  • Development of open source software, applications and platforms
  • Policy and socio-economic issues
  • Non-digital open knowledge initiatives

This area collates posters and slides presenting GODAN's outcomes and activities as well as those focused on open agriculture and nutrition.

This channel publishes GODAN Secretariat and Partner outputs including impact reports, policy papers and progress reports.
